Call to Order – Jackie Approval of February Minutes – Pam moved, John seconded, approved San Diego SeaLions – Amie Becker, General Manager ask to attend our meeting as she is trying to get the word out about the SeaLions soccer club. Now that the WPS has formed, the SeaLions want to garner more attention to San Diego in hopes of having a professional team return to our town. The SeaLions offer fun events for soccer club groups such as, Birthday opportunities, PQ Night, High 5 Lines, Ball Kids, etc. The season starts in May and the games will be played at Cathedral High School, and the schedule is posted on the SeaLions website at www.sealionsoccer.com. We will talk to Bill Barber about adding a link on our website to theirs. Additionally, the SeaLions are available to come out and do clinics with our teams and will make appearances at our tournament. It was mentioned that this might be a great “extra” to offer to our Rec program and further discussion will be had. Kick For Hope – Kristen Chandler presented a CYSA sanctioned summer tournament to benefit kids in Africa. Kristen’s son spent time in Uganda and learned about the passion the kids have for the game of soccer. But they have no shoes or equipment to make playing the game easier. Kristen and her family have partnered with several organizations; Malaria No More, Grassroots Soccer, and Charity Water to put on this event to raise money for this cause. 100% of the entrance fee goes to a Charity of the team’s choice. Teams that sign up for the tournament will get their club logo placed on the Kick For Hope website. The tournament is scheduled to be held July 11 & 12 in the San Diego area. We will ask Bill Barber to add a link to their website on ours. Garon Scholarship Presentation – Dennis Garon came to present two scholarships in memory of his son Greg who died in 2005. Mr. Garon, along with a group of his friends started PQYSA in 1977 – we got our Red & Black colors because they were all SDSU graduates! The Garon’s had two sons, ten years apart in age, who both loved to play soccer. When their oldest son first started playing there was no club in Penasquitos so their son Greg played in Poway. From 1975 to 1977 the Garons and friends grew the one team in PQ to a total of 45 teams and started PQYSA. A committee of Seamus, Mike P., Jackie and Bob met to discuss the players who were qualified for this scholarship award. Two awards were presented since last year none were presented. The two scholarship winners were – Stephen Posa – Stephen came to PQ when he was 13 years old from New York and Seamus began coaching him at U14. Stephen was the top goal scorer on the team, and part of the U15 team won State Cup under Seamus’ leadership. Stephen was voted Captain of his team by his players, and was highly recruited by Surf Soccer to join their club. Stephen remained loyal to PQ and remained in our program until he graduated from high school last year. He is now playing college soccer. Stephen was awarded $500.00. Mike Cuaresma – “Mikey”, as he is affectionately called, joined the PQ Rec program at U8, and continued to grow and develop within our Competitive program. Also voted Captain by his peers, Mikey makes a contribution to his team on and off the field every day. Mikey too was contacted by Surf to join their club, but he like Stephen chose to stay with our club. Seamus commented on the amount of respect he has for Mikey because of the way he treats the people around him. Congratulations to both Stephen and Mikey on receiving their awards, and for representing our club in such a positive way. Cal South PAD Ruling - The disciplinary decision has been handed down by Cal South in the matter of Taylor Mackenzie Brennan. The following statement will be posted on our website for the next 6 months. "PQYSA publicly acknowledges that the rights of Taylor Mackenzie Brennan were violated as per Cal South rules and regulations. Mr. Rob Alarcon was informed by the PQYSA board of directors that his actions in this case were unacceptable and under no uncertain terms is a situation like this to happen again. The board established official guidelines that no coach, administrator, manager or board member shall prevent, threaten or interfere with a players right to participate in sanctioned play outside the jurisdiction of PQYSA to conform with Cal South regulations. If these guidelines are not adhered to, disciplinary sanctions may include suspension of a minimum of 6 months. All future team administrators shall be informed of this guideline. In addition to this guideline, we establish the following guideline (both guidelines to appear in PQ Premier player/parent agreement and managers manual). "Team tournaments for the season are to be decided and announced to the team at the beginning of the season. Player commitment to these tournaments is expected. The decision to join the team implies commitment to team decisions in regards to team play (pre and post season tournament play as well as regular season play). It should be understood by all players and parents that success of the team is built though the participation of the team as a whole unit." Budget & Financials – Pam Pam presented the February Balance Sheet and Income Statement and gave an update on the 2008 – 2009 Budget to Date Actual numbers. Tony presented a quote from Soccer Fanatic for the cost of replacing our goals. The board asked Tony to get tow more quotes and present them at the next board meting. Competitive Update – Seamus & Pete Tryouts for the youngers are OVER! Thanks to the rain the process was particularly grueling this year. Final decisions are still being made on the BU 14’s and it is possible that we will have three teams at this age bracket this year. The calendar for the year is being finalized. Rec Update - A Rec Clinic is planned for Sunday, March 15 to be held at Park Village Elementary with the following schedule – 3:00 – 4:30 Kids 4:30 – 5:30 Coaches Seamus needs additional help from the coaches to make this a success. Seamus has prepared a simple skills based clinic to present. Carol will check to make sure the field is available and we can get a permit to use. 250 kids have registered for Spring Soccer thus far. Uniforms – If all of the Older Teams return, we will have 51 teams total this year. Uniform orders for the youngers are due March 17. Approval of Managers/Treasurers – The new list of Managers and Treasurers of the Younger teams was circulated by e-mail and approved by a majority of the board after the Board Meeting. This approved list, along with a copy of the minutes will be provided to Union Bank in Penasquitos so that the Team Accounts can be superseded to change signers. It was decided by the board that the Team Accounts can be managed by the Team Manager and Treasurer, without intervention from the Board. Instructions will be delivered to Union Bank to remove the former President and Financial Secretary from all of the Team Accounts, and allow only the team representatives to sign. Mailing addresses on the accounts will also be changed to either the Team Manager or the Team Treasurer. If a team doesn’t currently have a Treasurer or a Manager, then Jackie Stupack, club President and Vicky Mario, club Financial Secretary, will sign on the account along with the team representative. Once the meeting minutes and approved list of Managers and Treasurers has been given to Union Bank, an e-mail will be sent to all team representatives so that they can make arrangements to go to Union Bank and make the necessary changes. Adjourned, 8:45. |
